Mail Advice

Some General Mailing Tips:
  • Regular letters are 98 cents. You can either combine stamps or buy 98 cent stamps at the post office.
  • Mail is slow in Tanzania, so don't worry if it takes a while to hear back.
  • ALWAYS write "airmail" on your envelopes.
  • Address packages in red ink.
  • Padded envelopes are less likely to get searched than boxes. Try to tape things if they rattle around a lot.
  • Lighter is better. Four lbs or less is great.
  • On customs forms, try to be vague and list things that won't be searched. I.E. "Education Materials" or "Religious Supplies". Using tampon boxes and such to conceal pricey items also works.
  • Don't list the value of any package as more than $10. Hefty customs fees!!
  • Avoid postcards as they are more likely to get lost/be put up on a post office wall.
  • To make sure things arrive intact write religious messages on the outside of the box.
